Undoubtedly one of the most important factors of SEO is the ability to acquire high quality, relevant, one-way links. None of us like to see how many links we can get when every day, just getting one link is a task in itself. There are several ways though to really increase your sites ‘linkability’.
Rob Sullivan over at Search Engine Journal has some really wonderful tips about acquiring links on his journal entry here.
I have found that the method that works best for me is to research a company to see how you are both relevant, and also see what you have to offer them in exchange for a link. Anything other than a reciprocal link will do, but be careful when offering to pay for the link due to recent submissions to Google for paid links.
After you have enough information about their business and what you have to offer them, give them a call! Simply calling someone or mailing them a letter is a slower, more effective way of getting them to create a quality link for you. Do not ever assume that just because it is a simple text link ad pointing to your site, you need to get as many as soon as possible. One of these links from a well known, relevant site can boost your ranking several pages, for several different keywords.
Treat it like a partnership, because honestly, thats what it is.
